ACDGC: REVIEW of 2018

2018 was another good year in Wichita and surrounding areas for continued growth of disc golf and expansion and improvement of disc golf facilities. But, the growth of the sport has some growing pains for the ACDGC and and that, along with some “shifting sands” regarding the future of Clapp Memorial Golf Course pose some challenges for the club that will persist in the coming year.

  • Facilities/Events
    • Cessna Park Disc Golf Course
      • ACDGC purchased sleeves and Wichita Parks and Rec provided housing for installation of additional sleeves in Cessna East for expanding course to championship level for tournament play.
      • Wichita Parks and Rec installed 27 tee pads in Cessna E and W
      • ACDGC volunteers installed 9 in-ground sleeves in Cessna E.
      • ACDGC Consult with Wichita Parks for additional trees
      • Hosted Doo Dah PDGA B-tier and Keeper of the Chains A-tier events as part of KDGA Oz Tour.
      • Hosted ACDGC league events and 2018 Membership Drive
      • Continued course clean up and maintenance including trimming, spreading chips and rotating baskets.
      • Volunteer hours: 158
      • Expenditures other than event expenses: $225.00
  • Millbrook Park West Disc Golf Course
    • ACDGC consulted with Wichita Parks and Rec on trees and parking.
    • New and replacement trees were planted by Parks and Rec
    • Wichita Parks and Rec has committed to put in additional parking in 2019.
    • Wichita Parks and Rec has committed to installation of tee pads in 2019
    • Design and installation of tee signs to be completed in 2019
    • ACDGC maintained course trimming and rotating baskets.
    • Volunteer hours: 75

  • Oak/North Riverside Disc Golf Course
    • ACDGC requested and Wichita Parks approved planning for tee and caution signs.
    • ACDGC continued course clean up and maintenance including trimming, spreading chips and rotating baskets.
    • ACDGC hosted league events, the Annual Food Drive tournament.
    • Hosted one PDGA B-tier and one A-Tier Tournaments: the Doo Dah Open and Keeper of the Chains as part of the KDGA Oz Tour.
    • Volunteer hours: 140
    • Expenditures other than event expenses: $325.00
  • Herman Hill Disc Golf Park
    • ACDGC continued course maintenance, repairing and painting all 18 benches, reset 2 loose pin placements and rotating basket placements.
    • Hosted regularly scheduled ACDGC League events, 2 PDGA B-tier tournaments, the Doo Dah and Round Up, as part of the KDGA Oz Tour Schedule
    • Volunteer hours: 130
    • Expenditures other than event expenses: $75
  • Clapp Memorial Public Golf Course
    • The Championship Level Course was fully installed, baskets and tee pads in time to use in the Keeper of the Chains, a PDGA A Tier event.
    • Wichita Parks and Rec funded the full cost of baskets and installation.
    • ACDGC provided consultation and volunteer help for installation, and course prep for the tournaments
    • Volunteer hours,  aprox.  55 man hours.
    • Course was well received by advanced and open tournament players
    • Due to financial considerations, the future of the traditional golf course at Clapp is in question. Until that issue is resolved Wichita Parks and Rec has decided to put on hold the proposed pay for play disc golf operation and baskets were removed to storage following the tournament. We are told the course can still be made available for PDGA sanctioned tournaments in 2019
  • Cowskin Creek Disc Golf Park, Colwich
    • ACDGC Parks Liaison, Bill Paulson, spearheaded efforts in Colwich to get new baskets and tee pads installed at the Cowskin Creek Disc Golf Park.
    • ACDGC donated $450 of club funds and $450 of the Play it Again Sports Donation to the club towards coverage of expenses of two holes.
    • ACDGC volunteers and others continued clean up, maintenance and clearing of course and installed new MVP baskets and consulted on tee pad installation, aprox. 430 man hours.
  • Stone Creek Disc Golf Park, Derby
    • Continued advocating to Derby Parks and Rec on upgrading baskets
    • Continued maintenance and clean up of disc golf course including spreading chips and trimming and painting and repair of benches.
    • Hosted regularly scheduled ACDGC League events.
    • Volunteer hours: 85
    • Expenditures other than event expenses: $30
  • Workshops, community outreach
    • Rose Hill community center OK Kids Playday
    • Wichita parks and rec summer camp at Evergreen Park
    • Expenditures: Rose Hill, $10.50. Evergreen, $7.50
    • Man hours: Rose Hill, 20. Evergreen, 12
  • ACDGC Volunteers
    • Outstanding volunteers: ACDGC members, other than board members, who, without being asked, frequently or regularly served the disc golf community in 2018
      • Cory Ward for organizing events in Colwich to raise additional funds for tee pads
      • Scott Parker for painting and repair of all the benches in Herman Hill and Stone Creek plus continued regular maintenance moving baskets at Herman Hill
      • Buddy Kassner for continued maintenance at Cowskin Creek DG Course in Colwich and prep work for tournaments.
      • Rob Anderson for cleanup and moving baskets regularly at Millbrook Park
