Update on ACDGC Projects: West Millbrook, Cessna, Clapp Memorial and Stone Creek

As we near our Membership Drive this Sunday I wanted to give a quick update on where we are at on four important projects. One that’s been delayed, one in progress and two fairly new, but quickly developing.

First, that delay on Millbrook West disc golf course, located at 119th W and Taft. We have finally got firm word from Wichita Parks and Recreation that they will mow the area in preperation for install in mid to late October. We will need volunteers to get the 36 pins in place. So, keep an eye out on facebook for an announcement. It will be an 18 hole course with dual pin placements. Tee pads will not be installed until 2018 or maybe even 2019 depending on their budget.

Cessna Park (west end) is where we installed 18 new baskets with two pin placements in the spring. It is developing pretty well in terms of use and we are going to have our membership drive there this year, as opposed to our traditonal site, Oak Park. I am trying to get sign post into the ground to better mark the tees before then. But, if not it will happen as soon as I can get some volunteers organized. Let me know if you can help. The city is supposed to pour tee pads next year. And, it looks like we are going to get the go ahead to install pin placements and pads in the east end of the park for tournament use only. This will let us expand the course to well over 7000′ feet for major tournaments.

I just had a meeting with parks and recreation officials Monday. As many of you know we are pursuing hosting some major PDGA events within the next 2 to 5 years and the parks department is on board, along with Visit Wichita. Part of the plan is to utilize Clapp Memorial and that is why we designed a professional level disc golf course utiliziing free space in the front nine of the golf course. They were very impressed with our turn out for the trial run and it appears we have a good chance of getting a course installed that will be open for everyday use as well. But, that is not a solid deal yet. I hope to know something solid by the Membership Drive on Sunday.

Finally, we have been in discussions with the Derby Parks and Rec department about upgrading Stone Creek to Champion level with new baskets, and a slightly re-designed course. The discussions are moving along nice, but we still have some hoops to jump through. Keep you fingers crossed.

It is important that we continue to show a strong presence as a club. So, your membership is important. There is power in numbers!

If you are not a member yet, then this Sunday is a great time to join. You’ll get 15 months of paid dues for the price of 12. That’s just $15! And, then you’ll be eligible next year for a membership renewal discount. If you are already a member it is important to renew as soon as possible and encourage other to renew or join. We have had steady growth over the past three years but we still have a ways to go to break into the 200 member range.

Thank you for your continued support of Disc Golf in the Greater Wichita Area and to all the volunteers that have helped us to Grow the Sport.
